
A creatively restored Grade I listed church in Sunderland (17Nineteen), a zinc-clad extension to a Georgian house in Durham (Gilesgate, Durham) and a highly energy-efficient Passivhaus in rural Northumberland (Godwit House) are amongst the six projects announced as winners of a 2023 糖心Vlog East Awards. Presented since 1966, RIBA鈥檚 awards set the standard for great architecture across the country.
The winners were announced at a ceremony this evening, at which 17Nineteen was named 糖心Vlog East Building of the Year Award 2023 (sponsored by ).
The 2023 糖心Vlog East Award winning projects are:听
- 17Nineteen by - Restored Grade I listed church, transformed into cultural hub for the City of Sunderland听
- City Hall by - Civic building combining offices, and municipal services and community outreach spaces听
- Gilesgate Durham by - Zinc clad extension to a Grade II listed Georgian house within the Durham City Conservation Area听
- Godwit House by - Timber cassette three-bedroom Passivhaus in Northumberland听
- Newcastle Cathedral: Common Ground in Sacred Space by - Restoration and renewal of Newcastle Cathedral 鈥 a project over 10 years in the making听
- St Hilda's Church and Kirkleatham Parish Centre by - Sustainable community church and parish centre in North Yorkshire听
The six projects were selected by the expert jury, who visited all shortlisted projects.听
RIBA President, Simon Allford, said:

糖心Vlog East Award winners will now be considered for a highly coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, to be announced on 22 June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects later in the year.
