Mentorship for an editorial post: RSAW’s Touchstone editorial team

RSAW are looking for enthusiastic editorial volunteers to contribute to the future of Touchstone.

09 June 2025

RSAW are looking for enthusiastic editors to contribute to the future of Touchstone. The moment has come to organise responsible editorial succession. Initially a voluntary role, with the potential in the future to take on a paid editors post, has arisen. Touchstone is at a stage where it must make critical decisions on its future digital formatting, so skills and experience in this area is vital.

About Touchstone

Touchstone is the annual journal for architecture in Wales, first published in 1996. Since its inception, Patrick Hannay has served as editor supported by an editorial advisory group.

The journal serves as a review, covering all significant architecture in Wales while also containing a paid listing of architectural practices in Wales. It covers major building reviews, critical cultural essays, tributes to significant contributors to architecture in Wales, book reviews, student work reviews, cultural issue coverage, and commentary on prospective future projects.

Since 2021, Touchstone has been available in both hard copy and digital formats.

The high quality print journal has been circulated to a broad audience both in and outside Wales, including all members of the RSAW, directors of health estates, university estates and facilities departments, local authority and national park planning departments, key organisations in the construction industry and cultural sector, as well as libraries and community advice centers across Wales. It also reaches the Senedd and over 200 secondary school in Wales, as well as all major architecture journalists and editors in the UK.

A new digital format extends the journals reach, and provide an opportunity for more flexible editorial and regular content.

Interested in getting involved?

We’re looking for a chance to mentor enthusiastic editorial volunteers to contribute to the future of Touchstone, Wales’ only dedicated architecture publication.

We welcome individuals who are passionate and knowledgeable about architecture and Wales, have a keen eye for detail, and possess strong writing skills for both digital and print media.

We would like to meet and explore this opportunity with people from any background, at all levels, whether you are a student or recent graduate of architecture, design, publishing and media, or you are a professional within your industry and want to use your expertise to influence and write about architecture. It’s your passion, editorial judgement and knowledge that matter the most.

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to:

  • gain hands-on experience in architectural publishing, writing, research, and editorial administration
  • work alongside and be mentored by industry professionals to work towards becoming editor
  • influence and help shape architectural discussion in Wales
  • expand your knowledge and professional network

To express your interest in this role you can email us at RSAW@riba.org
