The RIBA has today responded to the Home Office's which confirms that architects will be added to the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) this autumn following the recommendations by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC).
RIBA CEO, Alan Vallance, said:
鈥淐urrently 25% of UK-registered architects are international, with the vast majority from the EU. However, since the referendum there has been a drop-off in registrations from EU architects, and we are concerned about the impact of this on recruitment. Ensuring the UK can access international architectural skills and talent is a key focus for the RIBA, as is the need for a flexible, responsive immigration system.
It is highly encouraging that the Home Office has accepted the Migration Advisory Committee鈥檚 (MAC) recommendation to include architects on the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) 鈥� something RIBA has been calling for, for some time. This is a positive development for architects trying to navigate the UK鈥檚 tricky immigration process.
We will however continue to urge the Government to drop their 拢30,000 suggested salary threshold, to ensure we attract a broad range of international, young talent, especially outside of London.鈥�
