RIBA welcomes government move to ensure Permitted Development housing meets space standards

Our response to the government鈥檚 move to ensure all new homes delivered through Permitted Development meet Nationally Described Space Standards.

30 September 2020

The RIBA has responded to the to ensure all new homes delivered through Permitted Development meet Nationally Described Space Standards.

RIBA President, Alan Jones, said:

鈥淚鈥檓 delighted and relieved that housing delivered through Permitted Development will now have to meet the National Described Space Standard, following significant campaigning by the RIBA and others.

The government has done the right thing by closing this dangerous loophole and ensuring new Permitted Development housing across England will have adequate space and light 鈥 standards that should be a given.

I look forward to engaging with the government over the coming weeks as they consult on . We must use this opportunity to ensure all new housing is safe, sustainable and fit for future generations.鈥
