Join the Liverpool Architectural Society for a screening of The Fountainhead. The Fountainhead is set in New York City during the 1920s and 1930s, a period of architectural innovation with the rise of skyscrapers. Based on the politically influential 1943 novel by Ayn Rand which dramatises her philosophy of objectivism through the story of an uncompromising modernist architect, Howard Roark, it pits his struggle for creative independence against a society that values conformity and mediocrity, contrasting his journey with rivals who achieve success by compromising their principles.
Core themes are individualism vs. collectivism, and the importance of intellectual and artistic integrity.
Rand uses architecture as a metaphor for her philosophical ideas. Modernist skyscrapers represent human creation and the triumph of the individual mind over nature, while traditional styles represent the mediocrity of copying the past.
The introduction and screening will begin at 6:15pm. Please note that doors open 30 minutes before the screening and the programme will begin promptly at the listed time.
